Back to school…smile under your mask

It’s hard to believe it’s been almost 6 months since staff and students have stepped foot into a school building. When the schools started closing, I assumed it would close for 2 weeks for cleaning and then resume as normal. Now it’s almost September and teachers anxiety is at an all time high. They are adapting to a new way of teaching. Students are confused and parents are torn between doing what is best for the safety of their child as well as what is best for their family. There are people who feel comfortable with going back and others who are scared of the unknown.

I am heartbroken that this is going to be my daughters Kindergarten experience. She is beyond excited to go to school and this 6 feet apart, masked world that we are living in is not what I want for her. But as I talk to her and prepare her for what to expect, I am amazed with how resilient children are. She doesn’t fight me to wear the mask. She is accepting that this is for our safety and she’s just excited to make new friends, ride the school bus and learn how to read. Sometimes the world is a much better place when looking through the eyes of a 5 year old.

As many are heading back to school, whether it’s virtual or hybrid, just remember we are in this together. One day we’ll be able to look back on this crazy time and appreciate the little things we took for granted.
